Mariem Hassan is the voice of the Sahara, the voice of the dessert. Adored by Saharawis living in exile, Mariem Hassan is an icon that gives hope to those who still live in the territories occupied by Morocco. With her prodigious voice and intelligence, she's been able to bring up to date Saharawi music and make it attractive for 21st century music audiences. In the film we go through Mariem's misfortuned life, we discover her as a courageous and enduring character and we witness her artistic transformation into one of the most charismatic and respected figures of the World Music scene.

Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn't exactly fit in with his tribe's longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Some bands are destined to stay together, the songs a powerful cohesive in the intertwined lives of their performers. Scullion is such a band. Three decades on from their formative gigs together, their signature sound is as strong as ever. The voices of Sonny Condell and Philip King have taken on a seamless harmony, pinioned by the bravura guitar playing of Robbie Overson, who has ably filled the role of founding member Greg Boland. Folk and traditional songs with contemporary splashes of jazz and blues colour, still inhabit their shows with songs including Eyelids Into Snow, Down in The City and John The Baptist.

Undeniably one of the most compelling films of the year, shining a floodlight on the Rape of Nanking. The massacre depicted in the film took place over several long weeks as part of the Japanese invasion of China in December 1937. Guided by the privileged eye of acclaimed director Lu Chuan, who spent almost four years researching the script, the film abandons the noisy fanfare of political propaganda and plunges into the disorienting chaos of war. Shot in gorgeous, majestic black and white, this is an epic and truly harrowing cinematic experience. Lu's camera records both the atrocity and the humanity of the soldiers, the strength and abnegation of the women, and finally the powerful drive to survive under the most extreme conditions.

Dir: Ken Wardrop - Ireland - 2009 - 80 mins - Cert: G
Ken Wardrop's debut feature proudly defies categorisation. Comprising a large number of conversations with ordinary (but remarkable) Irish women... each woman describes her own circumstances, but she also unconsciously contributes to the portrait of a composite personality. Shot in slightly grainy, attractively washed-out colours by Kate McCullough and Michael Lavelle (winners of an award at the Sundance Film Festival), the participants begin by discussing dads, go on to ponder boyfriends, and then move on to sons and husbands. We begin with a baby; we end with an elderly lady philosophically contemplating decline. His & Hers is, aside from being a very touching film, an enormously impressive formal achievement... a near-perfect act of cinematic sleight of hand: a beautiful tale told apparently by accident.

Amber has fierce bad indigestion and the Sambucas aren't getting rid of it. Lorraine attacks a customer at work and her boss wants her to see a psychiatrist. Kay's got an itch that Gem can't scratch (but maybe Kermit can). This perfectly pitched comedy focuses around three generations of women in modern day Artane and one extraordinary year of sex, birth, death and salsa classes. Little Gem, Elaine Murphy's first full-length play, has swept the boards since its sell out run as part of the 2008 Dublin Fringe Festival. It was the surprise hit of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the first ever Irish production to receive the prestigious Carol Tambor Award.

Jackie Daly, accordion
Matt Cranitch, fiddle
John Faulkner, guitar, bouzouki, vocals
In ancient folklore, three is a magic number, and you can expect the combined talents of Jackie Daly, Matt Cranitch and John Faulkner to let loose the Sliabh Luachra genie from the bottle. There's clearly some 'draíocht' in the waters of the upper Blackwater as this mountainous region on the borders of northwest Cork and east Kerry is renowned for its unique repertoire of slides and polkas as well as its very distinctive style of playing.
Though Jackie and Matt are both steeped in the rich musical traditions of the Sliabh Luachra, this collaboration with singer John Faulkner is very much a celebration of the here and now, the "living stream" of Irish music. An acclaimed songwriter and composer, John is a heartfelt performer who has traded lines with the likes of Ewan MacColl, Dolores Keane, Arty McGlynn and John Prine. Button accordion wizard Jackie needs little introduction to trad fans, and his work with legendary groups such as De Danann, Patrick Street, Arcady and Kinvara is testament to his versatility. Former Fleadh Cheoil winner and master fiddler Matt Cranitch is a founder member of the group Sliabh Notes, as well as a highly respected authority on and teacher of Irish traditional music.

Lebanon are recounted in this wrenching concentration of raw emotion. Set entirely within the claustrophobic confines of an armoured tank; the only views of the outside world are through the cross-hairs of the gun barrel. Four hot, grime-streaked, twenty-something soldiers are manning the tank amid deafening noise and a sickening rocking and bumping motion. No one obeys orders, and one by one they go into panic as they realize they have driven into a lethal trap. Dir: Niels Arden Oplev - Denmark/Sweden - 2009 - 152 mins - 18s - Language: Swedish Faithfully adapted from the novel... the first-rate The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo unites Mikael Blomkvist, investigative journalist and editor of the left-wing Stockholm-based journal Millennium, and the abused, bisexual working-class punk Lisbeth Salander, an ace researcher and computer hacker. They're involved in tracking down a rich, elderly business tycoon's niece, who disappeared as a teenager 40 years previously. Their quarry is the white ewe of one of those corrupt, arrogantly rich Scandinavian mercantile dynasties familiar to us from the plays of Ibsen and recent movies such as Festen. The pair don't meet until nearly an hour into the film, by which time their characters are very well established, and together they follow a succession of fascinating biblical and forensic clues that point to the activities of a serial killer, or killers, and put their lives in danger. – Observer.
