Guest curated by Brian O'Doherty (aka Patrick Ireland), the internationally acclaimed artist, critic and theorist, the show will explore Yeats' interest in the subject and realities of the outsider persona. Many of the great works from Yeats' late ex- pressionist phase will be included alongside his more local, political works of the 1920s. The show will be accompanied by a new publication with a major new critical text by Brian O'Doherty, as well as new texts by Dr Tricia Cusack and Dr. Thomas McEvilley.

An exciting exhibition of bronze sculptures and drawings by Mayo-based sculptor Rory Breslin. Though Breslin's exquisitely executed works are based in figurative realism, the tensions and disfigurements within them create uneasy viewing, often evoking the Classical man/monster myths of antiquity. Breslin's skill resides in his capacity to balance orthodox representation with at times a voracious and rich subconscious. A former lecturer in NCAD, and co-founder of the Head Sculpture Gallery in Dublin, Rory Breslin has had numerous solo drawing and sculpture exhibitions, both nationally and farther afield (Europe, US) and has executed a large body of public commissions.

This production by Siamsa Tire celebrates and explores Blasket Island living while also challenging our own notions of identity as contemporary islanders. Premiered in 2003, Oilean marked the 50th anniversary of the departure of the Blasket Islanders to the mainland. The Great Blasket Island, located off the coast of West Kerry still remains an almost mystical significance for many, both from Ireland and abroad.
The way of the life of the islanders and their spirit of survival is framed in this production, which captures the essence of this island community, their traditions and customs, their wealth of song and story, their love of life and their strong kinship with one another.

Mick O'Dea │Black and Tan
Black and Tan is an exhibition of portraits re-imagined through old photographs using charcoal and Indian textured paper. O'Dea brings to bear his wealth of experience as a painter of the human face and body; and as a landscape artist consciously receptive to the ever-shifting patterns of light. Throughout Black and Tan previously inanimate faces are lit up by living warmth and personality as the artist re-captures a depth in light as it falls across shoes, buckles and straps in a Dublin street or a Cork Barracks.

SIREN'S interpretation of this timeless classic presents it as a contemporary domestic drama - a shockingly modern story of a man and a woman caught in the nets of jealously and destructive love. Blurring the boundaries between theatre and live installation, public and private lives and what is seen and unseen, this classic tale resonates as much today as it did thousands of years ago.

Some bands are destined to stay together, the songs a powerful cohesive in the intertwined lives of their performers. Scullion is such a band. Three decades on from their formative gigs together, their signature sound is as strong as ever. The voices of Sonny Condell and Philip King have taken on a seamless harmony, pinioned by the bravura guitar playing of Robbie Overson, who has ably filled the role of founding member Greg Boland. Folk and traditional songs with contemporary splashes of jazz and blues colour, still inhabit their shows with songs including Eyelids Into Snow, Down in The City and John The Baptist.

Music arranger and musican Martin McAllister is much sought after as an accompanist and as a session musician. It coudl be justifiably claimed that he has trained more people to the guitar than any other teacher in Ireland. Now is the time for the singling chicklets he has nurtured to test their wings. They come from Castleblayney, Crossmaglen, Keady and much of the South Armagh, South Monaghan area, are mostly young, and some will be taking the stage for the very first time. The standard of all the performers is assured but this night will give you a good chance to 'look into the seeds of time and see which grain will grow and which will not'.

Clann Lir, an eternal tale of evil and salvation, is a story as old as Ireland itself. According to the legend, the four children of King Lir, Fionnuala, Conn, Aodh and Fiachra were turned into swans by their wicked stepmother, Aoife.
This production portrays the journey of the four Children of Lir who are doomed to spend nine hundred years in the guise of swans, but are allowed to keep their beautiful singing voices. A glorious visual, musical and magical performance.

Matthew P. Morris in My Body Travels explores a new adventure. He's hitching his heels high and daring to redress his first solo piece. A 'he' who transforms to 'she' in order to walk the wild side of a lopsided reality of assumed identity, he's treading bare a silent world of desirable loneliness before finally surrendering to the natural order of serenity. A cycle of events; moments in time unravel unexpectedly to reveal where paths cross and people change our lives, often unsettling the ground beneath us. Shake it like a milkshake, moves that'll groove … all creamy and dreamy. A song might be sung. The dance will be danced. And please for a moment let there be quiet...

Undeniably one of the most compelling films of the year, shining a floodlight on the Rape of Nanking. The massacre depicted in the film took place over several long weeks as part of the Japanese invasion of China in December 1937. Guided by the privileged eye of acclaimed director Lu Chuan, who spent almost four years researching the script, the film abandons the noisy fanfare of political propaganda and plunges into the disorienting chaos of war. Shot in gorgeous, majestic black and white, this is an epic and truly harrowing cinematic experience. Lu's camera records both the atrocity and the humanity of the soldiers, the strength and abnegation of the women, and finally the powerful drive to survive under the most extreme conditions.

Dir: Ken Wardrop - Ireland - 2009 - 80 mins - Cert: G
Ken Wardrop's debut feature proudly defies categorisation. Comprising a large number of conversations with ordinary (but remarkable) Irish women... each woman describes her own circumstances, but she also unconsciously contributes to the portrait of a composite personality. Shot in slightly grainy, attractively washed-out colours by Kate McCullough and Michael Lavelle (winners of an award at the Sundance Film Festival), the participants begin by discussing dads, go on to ponder boyfriends, and then move on to sons and husbands. We begin with a baby; we end with an elderly lady philosophically contemplating decline. His & Hers is, aside from being a very touching film, an enormously impressive formal achievement... a near-perfect act of cinematic sleight of hand: a beautiful tale told apparently by accident.

Amber has fierce bad indigestion and the Sambucas aren't getting rid of it. Lorraine attacks a customer at work and her boss wants her to see a psychiatrist. Kay's got an itch that Gem can't scratch (but maybe Kermit can). This perfectly pitched comedy focuses around three generations of women in modern day Artane and one extraordinary year of sex, birth, death and salsa classes. Little Gem, Elaine Murphy's first full-length play, has swept the boards since its sell out run as part of the 2008 Dublin Fringe Festival. It was the surprise hit of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the first ever Irish production to receive the prestigious Carol Tambor Award.

Jackie Daly, accordion
Matt Cranitch, fiddle
John Faulkner, guitar, bouzouki, vocals
In ancient folklore, three is a magic number, and you can expect the combined talents of Jackie Daly, Matt Cranitch and John Faulkner to let loose the Sliabh Luachra genie from the bottle. There's clearly some 'draíocht' in the waters of the upper Blackwater as this mountainous region on the borders of northwest Cork and east Kerry is renowned for its unique repertoire of slides and polkas as well as its very distinctive style of playing.
Though Jackie and Matt are both steeped in the rich musical traditions of the Sliabh Luachra, this collaboration with singer John Faulkner is very much a celebration of the here and now, the "living stream" of Irish music. An acclaimed songwriter and composer, John is a heartfelt performer who has traded lines with the likes of Ewan MacColl, Dolores Keane, Arty McGlynn and John Prine. Button accordion wizard Jackie needs little introduction to trad fans, and his work with legendary groups such as De Danann, Patrick Street, Arcady and Kinvara is testament to his versatility. Former Fleadh Cheoil winner and master fiddler Matt Cranitch is a founder member of the group Sliabh Notes, as well as a highly respected authority on and teacher of Irish traditional music.

My Husband is a Spaceman, a multi-media solo show, this is the third part of an absorbing trilogy from an incredible live artist.
A Japanese office lady is content with her single lifestyle until she encounters Robin, an English University fellow, in Tokyo. They fall in love, get married, and move to England. But married life is not what Robin expects and the eccentric Englishman takes to locking himself in a room upstairs every night.
Derived from an old Japanese folk tale of love between a peasant and a crane, this is a love story loosely based on Kazuko's experience of a cross-cultural relationship, loneliness and how to survive it. One of the most personal and affecting performers you are ever likely to see.

Michael Haneke's latest, mesmerising work surveys the life of a rural Protestant village in northern Germany over several months from 1913 to 1914, ending, tellingly, on the eve of World War One.
Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke's latest, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in May, marks his first film in the German language since Funny Games in 1997. It's also his return to Europe after remaking that same film in America two years ago. Shot in stark black and white, this precise, mesmerising work surveys the life of a rural Protestant village in northern Germany over several months from 1913 to 1914, ending, tellingly, on the eve of World War One. Moving from house to house, we visit the homes of the pastor, the baron, the doctor and the steward. As we experience the rituals and intimacies of domestic lives, strange, violent acts occur: th' doctor's horse falls over a trip wire, the crops in the field are destroyed, an accident happens in the mill... It's tempting to read the film as a comment on where German society was heading - but Haneke keeps his story and themes closer to his chest than that, so that it ends up being a more universal essay on repression and violence. Partly a portrait of a time and place in history and partly a study of how sickness in the home can lead to sickness in society, it's also a mystery that, in usual Haneke fashion, is down to us to unravel. - Dave Calhoun / London Film Festival 2009.

Performed by two outstanding dancers, this powerful show takes place on the ground and in the air. It ends with a mysterious bruise, a longdistance dance, and a swallow tattoo to guide you. It starts with the people you haunt, and the traces of those who left without explanation. It's a live performance, with under-thecounter true stories. It's a blind date, with music to fill those awkward silences. It's dance for people who don't like dance. It's a guilty pleasure. It will not be sentimental, but it might be beautiful. It could get a bit x-rated. There may even be a slow-set. But whatever happens, you will not go home alone.

A dark tale of small-town solidarity. Majority rules and a close-knit community turns on one of its own. This is Listowel Syndrome - in a small town you can't afford to make enemies and actions do have consequences. Reflecting on a recent case that saw a large number of people express their solidarity for a convicted man through a wordless gesture, it brings to mind a Faustian pact. Told through dance, text, song and live music, this is a fable told for any town at any time.

Venue: All Saints Church Castleconnell
Welcome to Limerick County Council's fifth Autumn Music at Castleconnell Series and we invite you to join us on the second Tuesday of each month, commencing Tuesday September 14th in the beautiful setting of All Saints' Church Castleconnell. This year we depart from our previous focus on one composer to take a broad look at French Chamber music of the late 19th and early 20th century.
While our season of French music covers a range of styles, and features more than half-a-dozen composers (Debussy, Ravel and Fauré being the best-known), there is a distinctive flavour to the music of the period at the turn of the century which they all seem to share and which some believe reflects the Impressionist Movement in painting (Monet, Pissarro, Renoir) of the time.
The aim of Limerick County Council Arts Office in presenting this series is to give people in County Limerick the opportunity to enjoy live classical chamber music in a venue that is comfortable and intimate, with excellent acoustics. The emphasis of the concert programme is on the music no less than to provide a platform for some of Ireland's most talented musicians. Almost all the musicians participating are Irish, but living and working abroad for much of the time in London, New York or Paris means they are also truly international.
Autumn Music at Castleconnell Series is an initiative of Limerick County Council Arts Office and I also gratefully acknowledge our funding partners, The Arts Council and Music Network.
Join us on Tuesday September 14th, Tuesday October 12th, Tuesday 9th November and including Tuesday December 7th @ 8pm.

A critical and popular success, this masterfully constructed work brings searing intensity and rare theatrical excitement to its probing, yet sharply humourous study of love, hate and the dying myths of the American west.
In a stark, low-rent motel room on the edge of the Mojave Desert, Eddie and May love and hate their way through life. Unable to hold on or let go, they battle to keep from drowning together. This Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights masterpiece shows the heights and depths that love can take us to, and make fools of us all.

Love, sex, birth, death, dildos and salsa classes: Little Gem sees three generations of Dublin women on a wild and constantly surprising journey. Kay's got an itch that Gem can't scratch … Lorraine attacks a customer at work and her boss wants her to see a psychiatrist … Amber has fierce bad indigestion and the sambucas aren't getting rid of it… Paul is just using Amber until he can get to Australia … and there's the hairy man who fancies Lorraine but fails to rise to the occasion. And of course let's not forget Gem, who doesn't like the neighbours coming in to 'mind' him. If all that wasn't bad enough, Little Gem makes his presence felt and life is never the same again.
After sell-out seasons in New York, London and Paris, and a sold-out seven week run at Ireland's National Theatre and the Olympia, Gúna Nua's multi-award winning bittersweet comedy staring Anita Reeves, Neili Conroy and Genevieve Hulme-Beaman promises to be a great night out.

Life, say Fitzgerald & Stapleton, is both absurd and alluring, a grotesque practical joke constantly pulling away chairs from under dignity and reason. Their delight in the details of human existence struggles with their conviction of its futility. Nothing is sane, reality is a hall of distorting mirrors reflecting the grimness of our own pretensions.

Daniel Chester's practice investigates issues that look at contemporary Ireland within the framework of social, political and economic conditions. Through the use of drawings, painting, video and photography, Chester aims to question the abuse of the capitalist model within modern Ireland and how this has had a dramatic effect on the Irish psyche, confidence and economic future.
Focusing on the Irish context, "Successful Flaws" looks at how the concept of motivational speakers are becoming a massive factor within global business development, and how many people are now searching for direction and guidance during the current recessional period.
Daniel Chester is a visual artist living and working in County Leitrim. He has recently completed a Masters in Visual Arts Practices through the College of Art and Design, Dun Laoghaire. He has recently exhibited in the shows "Corporate Republic" Leitrim Sculpture Centre, "White Noise" Studio Six, Temple Bar Galleries and "Public Gesture" The Lab, Dublin.
This exhibition continues until 28th October. Viewing during centre opening hours. All welcome.

A triumphant return to The Source of this award winning company from Washington DC. This time performing a classic American play from Pulitzer Prize winner, Sam Shepard. Winner of the Obie Award, a critical and popular success, this masterful work brings searing intensity and theathrical excitment to its sharply humourous study of love, hate and the dying myths of the Old West. In a stark, low rent motel room on the edge of the Mojave Desert, Eddie and May love and hate their way through life. Unable to hold on or let go, they battle to keep from drowning together.
Join us for Shepherd's masterpiece that shows the heights and depths that love can take us to, and make fools of us all.

Message of Peace tells the amazing story of a lesser-known Irish hero John Boyle O'Reilly: visionary, poet, rebel, freedom fighter, and civil rights activist. Galway troubadour Sean Tyrrell traces his journey from early childhood set against a backdrop of famine, revolution, Fenianism and penal servitude for life in Australia and his great escape from there to the USA, weaving effortlessly between narrative, instrumental and song as he traces O'Reilly's colourful life. Since the 60s, Seán Tyrrell has been a potent musical presence on the Folk/Trad scene, with a string of acclaimed CDs and collaborative projects to his name, including The Orchard, Cry of a Dreamer and The Midnight Court. A double CD of Message of Peace was released last year. This project has received funding through Deis, the Arts Council's Traditional Arts Initiative.

Dir: Niels Arden Oplev - Denmark/Sweden - 2009 - 152 mins - 18s - Language: Swedish Faithfully adapted from the novel... the first-rate The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo unites Mikael Blomkvist, investigative journalist and editor of the left-wing Stockholm-based journal Millennium, and the abused, bisexual working-class punk Lisbeth Salander, an ace researcher and computer hacker. They're involved in tracking down a rich, elderly business tycoon's niece, who disappeared as a teenager 40 years previously. Their quarry is the white ewe of one of those corrupt, arrogantly rich Scandinavian mercantile dynasties familiar to us from the plays of Ibsen and recent movies such as Festen. The pair don't meet until nearly an hour into the film, by which time their characters are very well established, and together they follow a succession of fascinating biblical and forensic clues that point to the activities of a serial killer, or killers, and put their lives in danger. – Observer. Jessica Hausner (a former pupil of Michael Haneke) directs an ensemble piece about the role of miracles in the modern world. Beautifully photographed and set against the backdrop of one of the world's most famous sites of religious pilgrimage, low-key performances and a deadpan streak of humour steer away from oversentimental or pious overtones, while posing provocative questions about the value of religion to those in need.

Opera Theatre Company
Vivid and insightful, this heart-rending opera re-creates the world of 13 year-old Anne Frank in hiding, living in hope and fear, and longing for normality for herself and her family. Sung in English, the focus is on Anne Frank's original words – her joy over a glimpse of blue sky, the budding love for her friend Peter, her determination to remain courageous, her humour and her resilient hopes for freedom, all of which find moving and eloquent expression in the poignant score.
Opera Theatre Company's 24th year of touring opera throughout Ireland continues with this memorable and atmospheric opera. Russian composer Grigory Frid, whose own family suffered enormously under Stalin, was so inspired by Anne Frank's diary that he created the opera in 1969. With Andrew Synnott conducting Opera Theatre Company's eight-piece chamber orchestra and with direction by Ingrid Craigie and Annilese Miskimmon, this compelling production marks the company's very first visit to Roscommon Arts Centre.

Kay's got an itch that Gem can't scratch (but maybe Kermit can)... Lorraine attacks a customer at work and her boss wants her to see a psychiatrist... Amber has fierce bad indigetion and the sambuca's aren't helping. Then there's Paul, who's just using Amber until he can get to Australia.... and there's the hairy man who fancies Lorraine but fails to rise to the occassion... and of course Gem, who doesn't like the neighbours coming in to 'mind' him. And if all that wasn't bad enough, Little Gem makes his presence felt and well... life is never the same again.
Little Gem by Elaine Murphy and directed by Paul Meade is a must see.

Following a triumphant international tour including a sell-out run in Edinburgh, CIRCA comes to the Festival amidst a blaze of rave reviews and international public acclaim.
A brand new creation that remixes three previous works which have wowed audiences at Galway Arts Festival in recent years, CIRCA is movement at its most adventurous and dangerous. Combining acrobatics, dance, light, sound and video, seven performers move from highly complex tumbling sequences, to fast-paced flashes of great intricacy. Using a powerful soundtrack ranging from Leonard Cohen to Aphex Twin, this marks a new kind of circus, at once poetic, sensual and immense.

Supported by the Improvised Music Company Regional Touring Scheme There is nothing to beat the rhythmic drive and sheer power of a jazz big band. Founded in 2007, the Orchestra was set up initially to enable students at the Ballymun Wind Project to see and hear what a big band would look like, as an encouragement to them in their music studies. After a performance at Electric Picnic in 2008 and residencies in the Button Factory, the group has gone from strength to strength and this year alone they have appeared twice on the Late Late Show on RTE with singers Mary Coughlan and Jerry Fish. The timeless story of Phaedra's dark obsession with her stepson is placed in a contemporary Ireland that has become a fertile playing field for the capricious gods. Racine's masterpiece of the French theatre - itself drawn from Euripides - and themes from the baroque score of Rameau's operatic response to this mythic tale, have provided the springboard for a dynamic collaboration between writer Hilary Fannin and composer/musician Ellen Cranitch.
Through Fannin's scathing humour, Rough Magic's powerful production explores the extremities of passion, and the psychology of a doomed family in its attempts to outwit fate. The music is performed live by an ensemble of Ireland's leading musicians, under the inspired direction of Ellen Cranitch.
